Lifeboat
04:21

The past welded shut like a shipwreck
Buttoned up with a cravat and a handkerchief
With the eyes of a gambler
Gleaming with the eyes of a gambler
The steam rises up from the folks crammed together
In the decks below pressed up next to the engine
Made from powerful steel
She was holding on for dear life dearest in her belly
Kicking and prancing like a parade marshal
She was holding on
The past lies scattered shredded and tangled
Architecture compromised and blueprints mangled
A scrap of flag flailing in the wind
And what of the spring coming sure as the snow
Will shift from the mountains to the reservoir
And what of the future?
Tell me - what of the future?
She was holding on for dear life dearest in her belly
Shouting to be heard above the din
She was holding on - for - dear - life
Where did you come from and where are you headed?
Lifeboat sailing out on the desert
Funny how the words get stuck in your throat
Everybody out here on this lifeboat

Stealing The Jewels
03:53
|
|
||
I was dreaming about the past
Or was it the future?
Some idiot broke my crystal ball
I chased him around the world
Finally he had me cornered
Jumping out of a mirror on the wall
Stealing the jewels - I'll be
Breaking the law - they'll be
Hard on my tail
Traveling through time - you know that it
Isn't a crime - when you're
Losing the game - change the rules
In summer I count the stars
In winter I shiver
In autumn I watch the leaves fall down
I sleep in a city park
I was born in a trailer
But I'm going to be buried with a crown
Stealing the jewels - I'll be
Breaking the law - they'll be
Hard on my tail
Traveling through time - you know that it
Isn't a crime - when you're
Losing the game - change the rules

They say that the life of a wanderer will only lead a man to sorrow
Make yourself some wings of wax that melt when you touch the sky
But I've seen what happens to the fly when he's fighting off the spiders
Tears himself to shreds on the web and waits quietly to die
So she looks into my eyes and she asks me where I place my prime meridian
I told her if I had one it'd tripped me up and caught me long ago
So now I measure distances in carcasses and cheesy advertisements
Bank receipts and parking lots and gas stations endorsing Jesus
Just when I thought it was safe to settle down and take it easy
Someone saw the date stamped on the box and sent me tumbling from the shelf
Just when I thought it was time to pack it up and keep it going
I realized those bridges that I built had been burned by someone else
So here I am back out on the road with my moving parts all blurry
Highways resplendent in full bloom purple yellow pink and white
A family of five walks away from their car with cheeks a'glistening
The fire and the smoke blotted out by the sirens and the lights
So here I am waiting on the shore for a schooner named Niagara
Cost me sixty dollars for the tickets but it made somebody smile
And on the other side waits the wife of a man that I once murdered
She claims that she doesn't hold a grudge but I wouldn't blame her if she did
Just when I thought it was safe to settle down and take it easy
Someone saw the date stamped on the box and sent me tumbling from the shelf
Just when I thought it was time to pack it up and keep it going
I realized those bridges that I built could be used by someone else

Chasing Coasters
04:17
|
|
||
I worked the pedal with the knowledge that I wouldn't sleep
I put my ankles in the river where the water's deep
With algebra teachers drunk on the knowledge
That they can send their kids to college
A practice that they'll soon abolish
I cast a line into the wind and buried it in her cheek
And on the way to the emergency room I couldn't speak
We know the folks on the board by their screen names
We know cities in Spain by their team names
But you can't judge someone by the thrills they seek
And while I think of you the years keep rolling by
Like a dandelion petal floating up beyond the sky
I spent my life just chasing coasters for a chance to roam
And I'm glad you waited while I finally found my way back home
We threw a party without knowing that it couldn't end
Cooler's still sitting in the backyard up against the fence
You try to make sense of it all on a Monday
Movie night with a handful of friends
But Jar Jar Binks still haunts me in my sleep
You have to fill the tank as surely as the sun will rise
Caught up in the middle of cults slinging burgers and fries
Just chasing rollercoasters looking for a chance to roam
And I'm glad you waited while I finally found my way back home
I spent my life just chasing coasters for a chance to roam
And I'm glad you waited while I finally found my way back home

There Is A River
04:31
|

That Russian girl that works downtown at the bar
Rides her bicycle down a street freshly chipped and tarred
But she doesn't seem to mind
No she doesn't seem to care
And the wind blows through her hair like a river
She comes into my shop several times a week
With her headphones dripping with some Baltic beat
And she always orders the same thing
Yes she always orders the same thing
And the wind blows through her hair like a river
You better believe that
There is a river
Secretly flowing
Down under your boots
Under the sidewalk
The water is flowing
Keeping your secrets
Like what you had in your teeth
How you were feeling on Thursday
And what you got in your mailbox
The water remembers
Hydrogen doesn't forget
Cause we're all made of carbon
Like the ash in your bourbon
Like the lead in your pencil
Like the stars in the sky
And she always orders the same thing
She always orders the same thing
And the wind flows through her hair like a river

Ring The Bell
04:22
|
|
||
Down on my luck, out on the dole
Up on the ceiling lives a big hole
Water cascades in the bare-bulb light
In the bathroom mirror I'm smiling
Time to look through to see what can be seen
The dirt and the dust and the mania machine
The hubcaps the holsters the headhunter gloves
And the cigarette his boot is crushing
Life is cruel, life is strange
One day the ocean, the next a mountain range
I don't know where I'm going
But I'm sure I'm not getting there alone
Woke up late slept through my job
Bought a scratch-off ticket and some corn on the cob
Buttered her up to take a big bite
Waiting for a red-eye to Tunisia
Hitchhiker holding down the passenger side
"Drop me off here thanks for the ride"
Kindness rings the world just like a bell
So know your power and use it well
SO KNOW YOUR POWER AND RING THE BELL
Life is strange, life is mean
One day you're crawling on your knees
The next you're riding in a limousine
I don't know where I'm going
But I'm sure I'm not getting there alone
